How to use Prompts & Poses in your PhotographyFirst Thoughts. Ask yourself these questions when starting to collaborate with people during your sessions. What kind of photographer are you going to be? Analyze your personality and comfort zone with your clients. Do you work frequently with other videographers? Are your more artsy or do you enjoy the idea of seeing what happens when you throw your couple a wild card? These are all key ideas when figuring out how to structure your sessions! What is posing? Think still shot. This is the basis for a standard pose. A traditional way of looking at a pose is something without action or movement. This is more like having the groom put his hands on the bride’s waste, her hands on his chest, and smiling at the camera. It’s a still shot nothing candid is happening here. You get the gist? Good! What is a prompt and how can it benefit my session? Let’s take that same pose the one with the groom placing his hands on the bride’s waste, her hands on his chest, but instead of having them stand still and look at the camera you tell the groom to whisper in her ear, leading to a candid reaction creating movement. Let’s picture something else. (Get it “picture”?) Anyway! Picture this let’s start with the same scenario, this time we have them interlace their fingers and push against each other in an alternating motion. Turn it into a game! Who can hold back a smile the longest, who can make the funniest faces? Have them do these silly actions while in this push and sway motion. Now we are getting somewhere! Prompts are ideas for your subject that will create candid reactions, creating a real moments vs. something that is set up in a still position. We now know that prompts create and environment where candid photography can blossom! So my friend try it and embrace the embracement if you dare! Watch this technique grow your photography in ways you never expected! What is your comfort zone? Let’s chat! Say you aren’t a super chatty or outgoing character, and you prefer to get the pose just the way you envisioned it! No worries every photographer is different! This would suggest that you might be more comfortable working with posing. Now what if you have a super outgoing character, and you don’t mind doing the chicken dance for your clients, or playing Simon says just to make a kiddo laugh. Speaking from personal experience I’ve found the more fun I have with showing someone how to do a goofy prompt the more comfortable they are going to be! Yes, I have most definitely done a chicken dance for my clients! Did it work? ABSOLUTELY! Do you collaborate frequently with other Videographers? You may be wondering what this has to do with your photography prompts? Well my friend let me share with you! When shooting with a videographer we know that there is a type of magical collaboration about to happen! Let me explain. Videographers capture moments. In a sense their style is typically candid. Picture yourself as the videographer gather that first shot of the couple standing still and smiling at the camera. Now don’t get me wrong but there truly isn’t anything about that shot that screams WOW at me. It’s average and plain. Let’s picture this instead. Rewind with me. What if we were to tell the groom to spin his bride and bring her in for the most epic kiss, or they run off together in the distance, or we can tell them get that whispering shot again and all the sudden you’ve helped your videographer capture a masterpiece with you. This takes your session to a whole other level! EXTRAVAGANT! Yes indeed. Extravagant! Try it out! Watch these features take your skills to the next level, not only that but see how the client experience comes to life and has you all laughing the whole session. Now posed photos are still so special and are definitely something I use ever now and then but candid photography is my jam! Let me know how it works for you! Bethany HurstHello! Archives
